Interact By Liaqat Rasul

Mental Fight Club commissioned a one day exhibition of work created by artist Liaqat Rasul and exhibited in April. This was held at White Conduit Projects a gallery in the heart of Islington, London near to where the artist is based.

For this exhibition Liaqat created 8 pieces of sculptural mobile work that hung from the walls and ceiling of the gallery. With the changing light of the day, the breeze and movement in the gallery these sculptures came to life by moving and creating shadows, movement and different elements of each face. This movement really brought the pieces to life and added another layer of interactivity to the exhibition. The private view held in the evening gave the audience the chance to interact with the work and hear from the artist about the background and the process behind the works being displayed. We were overwhelmed by the support and interest from people in the area, followers of Liaqat’s practice and our patrons.

“Making art is an act of hope. Liaqat invites the viewer to experience his low-tech, textured works, eyes darting about to take in the many elements, in their own time, meditatively, diverted from smartphones and the persistent digital world. Liaqat aims to create bigger and bolder collages and fibre works. His art doesn't have to be in a frame or on a wall. It might be a  large kinetic hanging sculpture, a piece of architecture, or a public art installation. Think tactile. Think analogue.”- Liaqat Rasul

This exhibition was made possible by the financial support provided by The Wellcome Trust. This funding has enabled Mental Fight Club to expand and broaden the scope of the projects we deliver to incorporate the views of participants in research on the power of artistic expression to improve mental wellbeing. We are proud and excited to be able to support the practice of artists with lived experience up and down the country.

Co-production and collaboration with a diversity of artists and practitioners with lived experience has always been central to the MFC approach. Through the development and delivery of our projects, we have partnered with a great number of artists and practitioners to deliver thousands of hours of creative activities.

We would like to extend our greatest thanks and appreciation to Liaqat Rasul and White Conduit Projects for their collaboration in this projects.
