The Joys of a Child By Jason Brownlee

28th - 29th of March 2022

At Leadworks Plymouth.

'The Joys of a Child’ By Jason Brownlee

On the 28th of March Mental fight Club opened two day pop-up exhibition with Artist Jason Brownlee. The exhibition was held at “Leadworks” a multi-arts and community space in Plymouth where Jason has based his arts practice.

For this exhibition Jason produced an eclectic mix of 9 original paintings which were viewed in conjunction with an original spoken word poem played via Bluetooth headphones, which resulted in a very personal experience, and an intimate understanding of the work on display. We were overwhelmed with the support and attendance from the local community for our first event in Plymouth.

“This body of work is a celebration of colour connecting to my inner child, exploring conformity in society and how it takes us further away from that innocence we are all born with.

The Joys of a child are a series of paintings both abstract and figurative abstract with an audio recorded poem that allows you the audience to investigate the mind of the artist. Created from a phenological perspective my own, these paintings are my interpretation of the world around me gained from experiences of the environment in which I live, and in return this creates knowledge that is unique to me.

Process is very important to me and Formal art is a big part of my practice, line, tone, colour, pattern, shape, texture and composition are significant to my art practice.

Creating art is a cathartic process which fills a void inside of me, I love to be in the moment creating spontaneously forever experimenting and discovering new things, never being afraid to colour over the lines there are no mistakes in art”. – Jason Brownlee

This exhibition was made possible by the financial support provided by The Wellcome Trust. This funding has enabled Mental Fight Club to expand and broaden the scope of the projects we deliver. We are proud and excited to be able to support the practice of artists with lived experience up and down the country.

Co-production and collaboration with a diversity of artists and practitioners with lived experience has always been central to the MFC approach. Through the development and delivery of our projects, we have partnered with a great number of artists and practitioners to deliver thousands of hours of creative activities.

We would like to extend out greatest thanks and appreciation to Jason Brownlee and Leadworks Plymouth for their collaboration in this projects.
